In 1994, Swords became a county seat after the break up of the former County Dublin; in 2001, it became the administrative centre for that county, upon the completion of the Fingal County Hall.

Cependant, An Sord signifie aussi "l'eau de source", ce qui indiquerait qu'un important puits d'eau potable existait ici depuis l'antiquité. La ville de Swords compte 37 806 habitants. Pour atout touristique, elle possède, dans un espace vert, un petit chateau entourés de remparts et dont la tour peut être visitée. Plusieurs sociétés engageant notamment un grand nombre d'employés d'autres pays européens (call center, siège européen, etc. ) y sont installées.
