The Swiss National Library is intended to be open to all, and, by the breadth and scope of its collection, it aims to reflect the plurality and diversity of Swiss culture. It is a heritage site of national significance. The institution has been going through a period of change since 1990. This phase was given the name of RAMSES: Reorganisation for an Automated Management System and Enhanced Services. The principal objective of this project was to modernise the structure and operation of the Library and to increase services to borrowers and users with a view to transforming the Library into an information centre of truly national proportions.

Die Schweizerische Nationalbibliothek ist folglich die erste Anlaufstelle für Helvetica. Seit 1992 betrifft dies nicht mehr nur gedruckte Werke, sondern auch andere Informationsträger. Ferner sammelt die NB Publikationen von internationalen Organisationen, die ihren Sitz in der Schweiz haben oder die NB vertraglich zur Depositarin in der Schweiz bestimmt haben.

Elle rassemble les Helvetica, c'est-à-dire les ouvrages anciens et récents écrits dans toutes les langues ayant trait à la Suisse, œuvres et traductions d'auteurs nationaux (ou d'étrangers résidant depuis longtemps en Suisse) parues en Suisse ou ailleurs, enfin l'ensemble de la production suisse en matière d'imprimés. Elle collectionne également les cartes postales, les cartes géographiques, les portraits, les affiches et les partitions. En 1928, l'Association des bibliothécaires suisses lui confia la tâche de tenir à jour le Catalogue collectif suisse, soit le catalogue des ouvrages étrangers en dépôt dans les principales bibliothèques de ce pays. Le service du prêt, ouvert en 1900, est gratuit pour tous les utilisateurs. Toute personne qui est majeure et a un domicile fixe en Suisse peut s’inscrire. La Bibliothèque nationale suisse prête ses livres à domicile (à l’exception des livres précieux), en dehors de Berne par envoi postal.

Infatti oltre alla produzione libraria raccoglie anche cartoline postali, carte geografiche, ritratti, manifesti e spartiti musicali. Raccoglie inoltre le pubblicazioni delle organizzazioni internazionali che hanno sede in Svizzera, come ONU, OMS, ecc. Di conseguenza la collezione principale della Biblioteca è chiamata Helvetica, vale a dire "tutto sulla Svizzera".
