La trama si basa su uno scenario in cui il mondo intero è stato colpito da una epidemia dovuta ad un virus altamente letale, al quale è scampata solo l'1% dell'intera popolazione. La serie fu creata e prodotta da Terry Nation (già creatore di Doctor Who) per la BBC ed è costituita da 38 episodi da 50 minuti, divisi in tre stagioni. Il primo episodio della prima stagione fu trasmesso in Inghilterra nel 1975 sul canale BBC1, a seguire successivamente nel 1976 e 1977. In Italia furono trasmesse con notevole successo le prime due sole stagioni, nell'estate del 1976 dalla TSI (il canale della Svizzera Italiana, allora captabile in tutta la Penisola) e nell'inverno 1979 dalla RAI. Ciascun episodio era della durata di novanta minuti, condensando con numerosi tagli più di un episodio originale. L'intera serie è stata pubblicata su DVD e distribuita in edicola in Italia dal 27 dicembre 2008 in fascicoli settimanali e rispettandone l'ordine e la durata originali. Nel 2009 infine le tre serie sono state pubblicate suddivise in 3 singoli box dalla Yamato video: anche questa edizione è fedele all'originale, ma risulta rinnovata sia nell'adattamento che nel doppiaggio.
