The supraoptic nucleus (SON) is a nucleus of magnocellular neurosecretory cells in the hypothalamus of the mammalian brain. The nucleus is situated at the base of the brain, adjacent to the optic chiasm. In humans, it contains about 3,000 neurons.

Der Nucleus supraopticus ist damit eine Schnittstelle zwischen Zentralnervensystem und endokrinem System. Vasopressin wirkt als antidiuretisches Hormon (ADH, die Urinausscheidung hemmendes Hormon), da es die tubuläre Rückresorption von Wasser in den Nieren fördert. Bei einer Schädigung mit Verlust der ADH-Produktion kommt es zum Diabetes insipidus.
