- A style sheet language or style language, is a computer language used to describe the presentation of structured documents. A structured document which doesn't break the schema it is designed to conform to is "well-formed". A program processing the document must model the schema, and can present it in different formats, fonts, and order, as well as with other effects, by using different sets of style rules contained in different style sheets. One modern style sheet language with widespread use is Cascading Style Sheets, which is used to style documents written in HTML, XHTML, SVG, XUL, and other markup languages. One of the most attractive features of structured documents is that the content can be reused in many contexts and presented in various ways. Different style sheets can be attached to the logical structure to produce different presentations. In order for content in structured documents to be presented, a set of stylistic rules – describing for example, colors, fonts and layout – must be applied. A collection of stylistic rules is called a style sheet. Style sheets in the form of written documents have a long history of use by editors and typographers to ensure consistency of presentation, spelling and punctuation. In electronic publishing, style sheet languages are mostly used in the context of visual presentation rather than spelling and punctuation.

Obecnie, powszechnie używanym językiem arkuszy stylów o szerokim zastosowaniu jest CSS (ang. Cascading Style Sheets), pozwalający na opisanie wyglądu dokumentów napisanych w HTML, XHTML, SVG, XUL, XML, oraz innych językach znaczników. Do jednego dokumentu może być przypisanych wiele arkuszy stylów, dzięki czemu treść może być prezentowana na różne sposoby. Aby treść dokumentu mogła zostać przedstawiona w należyty sposób niezbędne jest zastosowanie zestawu zasad stylistycznych, takich jak np. kolor, czcionka lub układ treści. Kompletny zestaw reguł dla danego dokumentu nazywany jest arkuszem stylów. W formie dokumentu pisanego arkusze stylów od dawna były używane przez edytorów i poligrafów do określenia reguł prezentacji, pisowni oraz interpunkcji. W publikacjach elektronicznych arkusze stylów są głównie wykorzystywane w celu dokładnego określenia wyglądu dokumentu pod względem wizualnym, nie przywiązując wagi do innych aspektów dokumentu takich jak interpunkcja czy ortografia.
