Studio Pierrot is a Japanese animation company, founded in 1979 by former employees of Tatsunoko Production. They are considered specialists in the magical girl sub-genre, especially with their magical girl series of shows. The company has a simple logo of the face of a clown. Pierrot is a Japanese loanword for clown, adopted from the classical character of Pierrot. YuYu Hakusho and Saiyuki, two of the company's anime series, won the Animage Anime Grand Prix Award in 1993 and 2000, respectively.

Ihr zweites Werk Urusei Yatsura erschien 1981 und entstand in Zusammenarbeit mit Kitty Films. Dies waren jedoch alles Co-Produktionen und so war Seijushi Bismark (in überarbeiteter Form als Saber Rider und die Starsheriffs bekannt) aus dem Jahre 1984 das erste eigenständige Werk des Studios. Die vorigen Produktionen waren im Bereich Comedy, Action und Fantasy angelegt; somit war das Science-Fiction-Genre Neuland für das Studio. In den folgenden Jahren hatte das Studio vor allem mit Magical-Girl-Produktionen wie Tokyo Mew Mew Erfolg, produzierte allerdings auch erfolgreiche Shōnen-Anime wie Naruto, Yuu Yuu Hakusho und Bleach oder I"s Pure Der Name der Firma ist vom französischen Wort für Clown abgeleitet.
