- Streetcar is the United Kingdom's largest carsharing company, with over 60,000 members. It was started in 2004 by Brett Akker and Andrew Valentine in South London, England . Its fleet consists of 1,000 VW Golfs, 30 VW Polos, 1 electric Prius (the first electric car offered in a car club in the United Kingdom), 125 VW Transporter vans and 20 VW Tourans. Cars for hire are parked in a dense network of dedicated spaces primarily in London, but with further spaces in several UK cities including Cambridge, Oxford, Brighton, Southampton, Guildford and Maidstone, and may be booked for as little as 30 minutes or as long as six months. Streetcars are reserved online or by phone, and can be collected and returned at any time using a client's smart card and a personal identification number. Usage charges are based on the length of time the client keeps the car, and mileage during the rental (the first 30 miles per calendar day are free). Research has shown that car clubs like Streetcar make a valuable environmental contribution, taking some 20 cars off the roads for every one car club car put on the road.. From the 1st of July 2009, Streetcar will pay all congestion charge costs for journeys inside the congestion charge zone in London, following member demand. Furthermore, as of the 1st July, petrol charges will be abolished on bookings lasting 48 hours or longer.
