- Straight pool, also called 14.1 continuous or simply 14.1, is a pocket billiards game, and was the common sport of championship competition until overtaken by faster-playing games like nine-ball (and to a lesser extent eight-ball). This is the classic game from the history of pool and most of the greatest players of all time were known to play this game. The game was formerly especially popular in the United States, and immortalized in the 1961 film The Hustler. In straight pool, the shooter may attempt to pocket any ball on the table. The object is to reach a set number of points determined by agreement before the game. One point is scored for each ball pocketed where no foul is made. A typical game might require a player to score 100 points, meaning at least 100 balls must be pocketed to win. In professional competition, straight pool is usually played to 150 points. Straight pool is a call-pocket game, meaning the player must indicate the intended object ball and pocket on every shot. How the ball reaches the pocket is irrelevant, as long as the called ball enters the called pocket. Straight pool is well known in the United States, Europe, Japan and the Philippines, but the game has become more obscure elsewhere. Probably the all-time greatest player (by professional statistics), Willie Mosconi, had a record high run. Here is what he said: "On March 19, in Springfield, Ohio, I ran 526 balls, a record that still stands. I was playing a two-hundred-point match against an amateur by the name of Earl Bruney in the East High Billiard Club. He made three balls off the break, then I ran two hundred and just kept going. The run took two hours and ten minutes, which means that over the span I averaged four balls a minute. I finally missed a difficult cut shot, but by that time I was weary; it was almost a relief to have it come to an end. There were about three hundred people in the audience, and one of them was an attorney who prepared an affidavit attesting to the validity of my claim to a new record. A few days later, the BCA gave its stamp of approval. " The first WPA-sanctioned World Straight Pool Championship was held in 2006. The winner was Germany's Thorsten Hohmann, a player who also won the world nine-ball title three years earlier.
- 14 und 1 endlos ist eine Disziplin des Poolbillards, bei der mit fünfzehn Objektbällen (die Farbigen) und einem Spielball (die Weiße) auf einem Poolbillardtisch gespielt wird. Es handelt sich um ein Punktespiel, bei dem es darum geht, eine bestimmte Punktzahl zu erreichen. Man darf jeden Objektball versenken und bekommt dafür immer einen Punkt, für ein Foul bekommt man 1 Punkt abgezogen. Negative Punkte sind möglich. Der Name 14 und 1 endlos kommt daher, dass man alle Objektbälle bis auf einen versenkt. Dieser bleibt übrig und das Rack wird wieder aufgebaut (der Platz auf dem Fußpunkt bleibt frei) und man darf weiterspielen. Dieser letzte Objektball sollte so liegen, dass man anschließend diesen versenken und gleichzeitig das Rack lösen kann, um danach weiterzuspielen.

Si gioca con quindici bilie numerate da 1 a 15 più una battente bianca. Scopo del gioco è raggiungere per primo un punteggio prefissato. Ogni bilia imbucata vale un punto. Il gioco si apre con le quindici bilie disposte a triangolo con il vertice al centro della linea di fondo e con la battente libera dietro la linea di testa. Anche l'apertura del gioco è dichiarata. Perché l'apertura sia valida si deve imbucare una bilia dichiarata e/o far toccare ad almeno due bilie colorate più la battente una sponda. Se viene a mancare una di queste condizioni si commette fallo: il giocatore viene penalizzato di due punti (-2) e l'avversario ha la possibilità di scegliere se accettare la disposizione delle bilie sul tavolo e continuare il gioco oppure riaprire o far ripetere l'apertura al giocatore che ha commesso il fallo. Il turno di un giocatore ha termine quando non si imbuca una bilia o commette fallo. Si commette fallo quando non si tocca nessuna bilia, si imbuca la battente, una bilia salta fuori dal tavolo oppure se non si tocca una sponda dopo aver colpito una bilia con la battente senza imbucarne alcuna. Ogni tiro non regolamentare verrà penalizzato di un punto sul punteggio del tiro precedente al fallo e l'avversario dovrà accettare la posizione delle bilie continuare a tirare. Quando però la battente finisce in buca o salta fuori dal tavolo di gioco il giocatore entrante posizionerà la battente a suo piacimento dietro la linea di testa e potrà solo colpire direttamente le bilie che si trovano oltre tale linea. Al terzo fallo consecutivo il giocatore verrà penalizzato di 15 punti e l'avversario entrerà con la "bilia in mano" dietro la linea di testa. Ogni bilia imbucata in maniera non regolamentare (ad esempio una bilia non dichiarata) dovrà essere riposizionata al centro della linea mediana di fondo. Se tale posizione risulta essere già occupata da un'altra bilia, allora la si deve riposizionare dove c'è spazio immediatamente dietro quest'ultima verso la sponda corta. Un tiro può essere anche di difesa ma anche quest'ultimo deve essere dichiarato prima. Quando sul tavolo rimane solo una bilia oltre la battente si ricompone il triangolo senza la quindicesima in testa che non verrà spostata e che quindi rimarrà fuori dal castello. Se per caso nello spazio dove deve essere rifatto il triangolo c'è una bilia (o la battente o l'ultima bilia) quest'ultima sarà spostata e riposizionata sull'acchito opposto; se entrambe le bilie si trovano dentro il castello allora la battente sarà posizionata in centro al tavolo mentre bilia colorata sull'acchito opposto. Il "pool continuo 14-1" è la specialità classica del pool americano noto al tempo anche con il nome "125" perché il punteggio da raggiungere generalmente era 125.

Till skillnad från andra poolspel får man sänka vilken boll som helst på bordet. Det är ett dessängspel, vilket innebär att spelaren måste tala om vilken boll som ska sänkas, och i vilket hål detta ska ske. Klarar spelaren detta, får han eller hon en poäng, och får fortsätta. När bara en boll återstår läggs de andra bollarna åter upp i triangeln, med den översta platsen tom. Om den sista nummerbollen ligger inom triangelns område, återplaceras den på huvudpricken, pricken vid motsatt ända av bordet. Man spelar ofta till ett förutbestämt antal poäng, i tävlingssammanhang vanligtvis 150. Spelet blir ofta mer taktiskt och långdraget än 9-ball och 8-ball, och är därför inte lika populärt i rekreationssammanhang. Efter dessa två grenar är dock 14:1 den vanligaste tävlingsformen av pool.
