- Steve Whan is an Australian politician and a member of the New South Wales Legislative Assembly. In February 2009 he was appointed Minister of Emergency Services. He has represented Monaro for the Australian Labor Party since 2003. Whan was born in Canberra, Australian Capital Territory, son of Bob Whan, a former member of the federal seat of Eden-Monaro, and educated at the Canberra College of Advanced Education, where he received a Bachelor of Arts in Social Sciences, majoring in Economics and Politics Interests in 1985. In 1998, he received a Graduate Certificate in Management from the University of Western Sydney. From August 1987 to February 1988 Whan was Assistant Private Secretary to John Brown, Federal Minister for Arts, Sport, the Environment, Tourism and Territories. From February 1988 to May 1992 he worked for then Senator Bob McMullan. From May 1992 to March 1994 he worked for Ros Kelly including the period known as the Sports rorts affair, Federal Minister for Environment, Sport and Territories. He worked for the Australian Sports Commission from 1994 to August 2001 and subsequently became a consultant on community relations and sport before running for Parliament. As of August 2009, Whan has widely been tipped to assume responsibilty for the NSW Government's Police Ministry. The move comes as Premier Nathan Rees attempts to consolidate his hold on power through the targeted shuffling of Ministers; elevating those apparently loyal to his Premiership, whilst demoting others seen to be supportive of his main leadership rival and current Health Minister, John Della Bosca. Whan lives in Queanbeyan with his wife and two children.
