The district stretches from Springfield to the southern suburbs of Columbus. Previously, Austria was a member of the Ohio Senate, representing the 10th District, first elected in 2001. The district stretches from Springfield to the southern suburbs of Columbus. Previously, Austria was a member of the Ohio Senate, representing the 10th District, first elected in 2001. Prior to that, he was a member of the Ohio House of Representatives from 1998 until 2000. In 2004, Austria easily won re-election to the Senate by defeating his Democratic challenger Charlie Hart, a Springfield-area farmer. Austria won the Republican nomination for the 7th District after nine-term incumbent Dave Hobson retired. He defeated Democratic challenger Sharen Neuhardt in the general election, 58.7% to 41.3%. He is only the fifth person to represent the district since 1939.
