Stephan Micus (born January 19, 1953) is a German musician and composer, whose musical style is heavily influenced by his study of traditional instruments and musical techniques from Japan, India, South America, and other countries around the world. In many cases, he plays all of the instruments on his recordings, combining styles from different countries and using the instruments in unprecedented ways in each of his pieces.

In many cases, he plays all of the instruments on his recordings, combining styles from different countries and using the instruments in unprecedented ways in each of his pieces. Oftentimes he uses layers of a single instrument to create unusual combinations of sounds. He is also one of the only ECM Records artists whose records are not produced by Manfred Eicher. Like Dead Can Dance member Lisa Gerrard, he often sings in a made-up language.

Een paar jaar later is hij te vinden in India en raakt beïnvloed door Ravi Shankar. Om de Indiase muziek te doorgronden verblijft hij er lange tijd en leert zo de sitar bespelen. De koek is nog niet op, want Micus trekt door naar Japan en ook daar wordt hij door de bevolking en muziek beïnvloed en geïnspireerd. Hij werkt het liefst alleen en bespeelt dan allerlei (voor ons) exotische instrumenten, die laag na laag worden opgenomen. Zijn muziek leent zich uitstekend voor meditatie en vertoont enige overeenkomst met Zen-muziek. Een basisopleiding muziek heeft hij niet; hij is het notenschrift niet machtig en laat alles via improvisatie en proberen aan de oppervlak komen. Om zich verder onderscheiden van andere musici zingt hij vaak in zijn eigen ontworpen taal. Zijn muziekalbums ademen alle dezelfde sfeer uit, doch het instrumentarium verschilt. Hij vindt zichzelf een soort Ark van Noach voor de elders inheemse muziek welke door de invloed van het Westen verloren lijkt te gaan. Hij gaat door het gebruik van plaatselijk instrumentarium in tegen de standaardisering van muziekinstrumenten.
