- A stenotype, stenotype machine or shorthand machine is a specialized chorded keyboard or typewriter used by stenographers for shorthand use. A trained court reporter or closed captioner must write speeds of approximately 225 words per minute at very high accuracy in order to pass the Registered Professional Reporter test. Many users of this machine can even reach 300 words per minute and per the website of the California Official Court Reporters Association the official record for American English is 375 wpm. The stenotype keyboard looks more like a piano than a conventional alphanumeric keyboard. Multiple keys are pressed simultaneously (known as "chording") to spell out whole syllables, words, and phrases with a single hand motion. This system makes realtime transcription practical for court reporting and live closed captioning. Because the keyboard does not contain all the letters of the English alphabet, letter combinations are substituted for the missing letters. There are several schools of thought on how to record various sounds, known as "theories", such as the StenEd and Phoenix theories. The first shorthand machine (the word "stenotype" was not used for another 80 years or more) punched a paper strip and was built in 1830 by Karl Drais. An American shorthand machine was patented in 1879 by Miles M. Bartholomew. A French version was created by Marc Grandjean in 1909. The direct ancestor of today's stenotype was created by Ward Stone Ireland in about 1913 or so, and the word "stenotype" was applied to his machine and its descendants sometime thereafter. Most modern stenotype keyboards have more in common with computers than they do with typewriters or QWERTY computer keyboards. Most contain microprocessors, and many allow sensitivity adjustments for each individual key. They translate stenotype to English internally using user-specific dictionaries, and most have LCD screens. They typically store a full day's work in non-volatile memory of some type, such as floppy diskette, hard drive, non-volatile RAM, or flash card. These factors influence the price, along with economies of scale, as there are only a few thousand stenotype keyboards sold each year. As of April 2008, student models such as a Stentura 400SRT sell for about US $1,500 and top-end models sell for approximately US$ 5,000. Machines that are 30-40 years old still resell for upwards of $350.
- Die Maschinenstenografie ist eine Kurzschrift, bei der als Schreibgerät eine Stenografiermaschine (Stenographen) benutzt wird. Da – wie beim Spielen eines Akkords auf einem Klavier – mehrere Tasten gleichzeitig gedrückt werden, wird sie auch „Akkordschreibmaschine“ genannt. Die Stenografiermaschine ist so aufgebaut, dass bei Bedarf mit jeweils einem Finger zwei Tasten angeschlagen werden können. Durch gleichzeitiges Niederdrücken mehrerer Tasten kann mindestens eine Silbe wiedergegeben werden. Die Buchstaben, die auf dem Tastenfeld nicht vorhanden sind, werden durch Buchstabenkombinationen dargestellt. Die meisten Stenografiermaschinen erzeugen ein für den Laien unverständliches Stenogramm, einen Tippstreifen, der die gleichzeitig getippte Zeichenkombination jeweils in einer Zeile auswies. Es gibt jedoch schon seit 1886 auch Stenografiermaschinen, die statt einer Kurzschrift direkt den Lautwert der eingegebenen Silben ausdrucken. Das Ergebnis entspricht zwar nicht der korrekten Rechtschreibung, lässt sich jedoch auch von Laien mit etwas Gewöhnung lesen. Seit dem Aufkommen des Personalcomputers geht der getippte Inhalt direkt zur Übertragung in den Computer. Das italienische Parlament, das seit 1880 Stenografiermaschinen nutzt, ließ 2003 eine Weiterentwicklung patentieren, die den MIDI-Standard für die Übertragung der Daten von Tastatur zu PC nutzt. Mit einer speziellen Software zur Worterkennung werden die Daten direkt in Klartext übersetzt. In Deutschland spricht man von dem WORAC-System (Word Accord-System). Stenografiemaschinen kommen beispielsweise in Parlamenten zum Einsatz, wo Reden direkt transkribiert werden. Die Maschinenstenografie bietet eine weitere besondere Einsatzmöglichkeit, nämlich die Untertitelung von Wortsendungen im Fernsehen in Echtzeit, das so genannte „live captioning“, damit Hörbehinderte Liveübertragungen verfolgen können.

Con este aparato se pueden ejecutar pulsaciones con una o más teclas presionadas simultáneamente. Existen diversos sistemas de estenotipia, que básicamente se dividen en manuales, informatizados y con los 2 sistemas. La escritura resultante muestra letras alfabéticas en caracteres de imprenta sobre una tira de papel. También el resultado se puede ver en un ordenador mediante la conexión de la máquina con un cable serial, viéndose las frases en un editor de textos especial. Esta sería la estenotipia informatizada, que es la que más se usa actualmente. Estos últimos permiten la grabación digital del texto y el sonido. Todas las máquinas están diseñadas sobre la base de un teclado con un reducido número de teclas (21 la máquina de tipo Grandjean y 23 la máquina del sistema Melani). En ellas se logra obtener pulsaciones de sílabas o palabras completas. Sea cual sea el sistema, el objetivo es recoger en tiempo real el discurso íntegro de una reunión, consejo, congreso, etc. , a lo largo de una jornada continua de trabajo de varias horas. También es usada la máquina de estenotipia informatizada (Sistema Melani) para realizar subtitulación en tiempo real para personas sordas, además de poder dar la transcripción del evento in situ. El operador encargado de ello recibe el nombre de estenotipista.

Siinä on näppäimiä vähemmän kuin kirjoituskoneessa, mutta useita näppäimiä voidaan painaa samanaikaisesti, ja siten kirjoittaa kokonaisia tavuja tai sanoja kerrallaan. Pikakirjoituskoneet ovat yleisiä erityisesti Yhdysvaltojen oikeusistuimissa. Nykyisillä tietokoneisiin kytketyillä laitteilla voidaan myös tekstittää suoria TV-lähetyksiä kuulovammaisia varten.

- La stenotipia, chiamata anche stenografia a macchina, è un sistema adoperato per trascrivere rapidamente ciò che viene detto attraverso l'utilizzo di un apparecchio dotato di una speciale tastiera e con l'applicazione di alcuni sistemi (ne esistono svariati) tesi a limitare ed accelerare il numero di battute. La prima macchina per la stenotipia fu inventata in Francia nel 1827 da Benoît Gonod, ma l'applicazione pratica di questa invenzione venne dall'italiano Antonio Michela Zucco, che creò un apposito apparecchio, adoperato fin dal 1880 dal Senato italiano. Oggi le moderne macchine per la stenotipia adoperano un sistema che consente di collegarle con il computer per l'elaborazione elettronica delle informazioni.
