- Stefano Modena ist ein ehemaliger italienischer Formel-1-Rennfahrer. Modena machte zuerst 1986 mit einem vierten Rang in der italienischen Formel 3 auf sich aufmerksam. - Stefano Modena (born 12 May 1963 in Modena) is a former racing driver from Italy. He participated in 81 Formula One Grands Prix, debuting on November 15, 1987. He achieved 2 podiums, and scored a total of 17 championship points. Modena first came to attention in 1986, ranking 4th in the Italian Formula Three series with the Milan-based Euroteam. The following season he moved up to Formula 3000, winning the championship for Onyx, and making his Formula 1 debut at the season-ending Australian Grand Prix for Brabham-BMW. For 1988, Modena signed up for the new EuroBrun team, but found the car uncompetitive. He qualified for 10 out of 14 races (because he was excluded in both 1988 Monaco Grand Prix and 1988 Mexican Grand Prix, owing to the car breaching the rules), with a best result of 11th at the 1988 Hungarian Grand Prix. That and his 15th Place in the Qualifying for the 1988 Canadian Grand Prix were the best ever results for EuroBrun. For 1989 he returned to Brabham. There he regularly matched his more experienced team-mate Martin Brundle, scoring points at the 1989 Monaco Grand Prix, where he finished 3rd, which was the last podium finish for the Brabham team. However, Modena failed to score any points in the other races, rather, he was taken off by technical problems, notably at the 1989 British Grand Prix and by aggressive opponents, notably Olivier Grouillard in a Ligier-Ford in the 1989 Mexican Grand Prix, where he then had to use the spare car and couldn't handle it at all and also Pierluigi Martini in the 1989 Canadian Grand Prix, which took both cars out on Lap 1. Also in that year, he had to miss his home Grand Prix because he was disqualified for having driven underweight during Qualifying. Modena stayed on at Brabham for 1990, but the team were low on funds. Aside from 5th place at the opening United States Grand Prix the year was something of a non-event, with an absolutely awful BT59, which was neither quick nor reliable. That didn't cost him the chance to leave Brabham in favour of the resurgent Tyrrell team, to replace Jean Alesi in 1991. He started the year well, coming 4th at the 1991 United States Grand Prix, running 3rd at the 1991 San Marino Grand Prix before his engine failed, holding a close 2nd behind Ayrton Senna at the 1991 Monaco Grand Prix until first Emanuele Pirro and Martini blocked him while become lapped and then another engine breakage, which took also a furious Riccardo Patrese in the Williams FW14-Renault out of the race and finishing 2nd at the 1991 Canadian Grand Prix, the penultimate podium for Tyrrell, because Mark Blundell finished third in the 1994 Spanish Grand Prix. However, the Tyrrell team fell away as the season went on, and Modena went largely into his shell, unable to change anything. He managed to score one further point, for 6th place in the 1991 Japanese Grand Prix, but even that was a disappointment, because Martin Brundle drove his best race of the season for Brabham and managed to beat Modena. When the 1991 Australian Grand Prix was stopped, he was 6th, but the laps 15 until 17 did not count any more, demoting Modena to 10th. For 1992, he signed for Jordan, but the Irish team had underpowered, unreliable Yamaha engines. Modena struggled all year, failing to qualify four times and becoming unpopular among the team for his unsympathetic treatment of his machinery, and increasingly introspective personality. He scored a point for 6th place at the Australian Grand Prix, which was his last Grand Prix. That also marked the one and only point for the Jordan Team in 1992, because his Brazilian Teammate Mauricio Gugelmin did not score any points, although Gugelmin qualified for all the 16 Grand Prix Races. From 1993 to 2000, he drove almost exclusively in the Italian and German touring car series, with mixed results.

In de tweede helft van het seizoen zakten Tyrrell en Modena echter weg. Voor het seizoen 1992 koos Modena voor het team van Jordan wat een succesvol debuutjaar achter de rug had. 1992 werd echter een grote teleurstelling, mede door onbetrouwbare Yamaha-motoren. Pas in de allerlaatste race wist Modena een punt te pakken. Modena werd door Jordan op straat gezet en kon geen team meer vinden in de Formule 1. Hij koos voor een toerwagencarrière bij Alfa Romeo en kwam regelmatig uit in de DTM en de ITC. Ook werd hij testcoureur bij Alfa Romeo.

Sezon 1992 to ostatni jego sezon startów w Formule 1. W zespole Jordan zdobył jeden punkt (w swoim ostatnim wyścigu, o Grand Prix Australii. W latach 1993-2000 ścigał się z różnymi rezultatami w wyścigach samochodów turystycznych we Włoszech i w Niemczech. W Formule 1 był zgłoszony do 81 wyścigów. Wystartował w 70, z czego ukończył 30.
