In Italia gli interpreti più popolari della steel guitar furono i fratelli Santo e Johnny Farina, con il duo Santo & Johnny, dove Santo suonava la steel guitar e Johnny la chitarra elettrica tradizionale, in funzione di accompagnamento ritmico. Anche se la steel è nata per il country e il blues, negli ultimi decenni ha contaminato diversi generi musicali, quali soprattutto il rock progressivo.
