Daraufhin erst werden die eigentlichen Wände und Decken aus Beton auf die stützende Stahlkonstruktion aufgetragen. Die Stahlskelettbauweise definiert sich in der Regel dadurch, dass das Haupttragwerk, d.h. Stützen und Riegel (horizontale Tragglieder) aus Stahlprofilen bestehen. Auf diese Weise ist durch die Verbindung mittels geschraubter Anschlüsse ein sehr schneller Baufortschritt möglich. Die Decken können sowohl als Betonfertigteile, Beton-Halbfertigteile, oder Verbunddecken ausgeführt werden. Diese Bauweise wurde vor allem in den USA durch die ersten Hochhäuser sehr beliebt. Frühe Beispiele der Stahlskelettbauweise in Deutschland sind der Handelshof in Lübeck (1924), die Zeche Zollverein in Essen und das zwischen 1935 und 1937 durch Paul Hofer und Karl Johann Fischer errichtete Gebäude 7 der ehemaligen Reichszeugmeisterei München in der alten McGraw-Kaserne.
