- State of Alert è il nome di una band hardcore punk (nota anche come S.O.A. ) attiva nella scena hardcore di Washington DC. Attivi per due soli anni gli State of Alert (che hanno all'attivo un EP ed una partecipazione ad una compilation) hanno avuto comunque una notevole influenza e importanza all'interno della scena hardcore di Washington ma non solo. La band è infatti citata come influenza di numerosi altri gruppi musicali hardcore anche appartenenti a scene musicali diverse, come i Negative Approach di Detroit e gli Agnostic Front del New York hardcore. Inoltre molti dei componenti della band otterranno ulteriore e maggiore successo dopo lo scioglimento grazie all'attività con altri gruppi musicali. Il cantante Henry Garfield diverrà molto famoso col nome di Henry Rollins insieme alla band hardcore californiana Black Flag. Anche il chitarrista Michael Hampton insieme ad alcuni componenti della band Untouchables darà vita ai The Faith e successivamente, insieme a Ian MacKaye, agli Embrace, considerata una delle prime band emo della storia e, insieme ad alcuni membri dei Rites of Spring, agli One Last Wish. Il bassista entrerà a far parte della band Iron Cross.

W marcu 1981 wydał nakładem firmy Dischord Records EPkę z 10 utworami. Później na składance Flex Your Head ukazały się jeszcze 3 piosenki. State Of Alert w przeciągu swojego istnienia zagrał w sumie 12 koncertów – wszystkie na wschodzie USA. Zadebiutowali 6 grudnia 1980 roku w Waszyngtonie, a ostatni występ dali 10 lipca 1981 w Filadelfii. Henry Rollins później wspominał, że koncerty zespołu trwały przeważnie od 10 do 15 minut, ponieważ piosenki trwały po 40 sekund. State of Alert wywarł również duży wpływ na zespoły takie jak np. Negative Approach. Po rozpadzie zespołu gitarzysta Michael Hampton i perkusista Ivor Hansen utworzyli zespół The Faith z Alec MacKaye'm. W 1985 Hampton i Ian MacKay spotkali się w zespole Embrace. W 1986 utworzył One Last Wish z Guy Picciotto (z Fugazi i Rites Spring) i Brendan Canty. Basista Wendel Blow kontynuował grę w zespołach: Iron Cross i Lethal Intent.
