Stanley Cowell (born May 5, 1941 in Toledo, Ohio) is an American jazz pianist and founder of the Strata-East Records label. He played with Roland Kirk while studying at the Oberlin Conservatory of Music, and later with Marion Brown, Max Roach, Bobby Hutcherson, Clifford Jordan, Harold Land, and Stan Getz. Cowell played with trumpeter Charles Moore and others in the Detroit Artist's Workshop Jazz Ensemble in 1965-66. During the late 1980s Cowell was part of a regular quartet led by J.J. Johnson.

Zwischen 1974 und 1983 spielte er bei den The Heath Brothers, von Jimmy, „Tootie“ und Percy Heath und nahm Stücke von Jimmy Heath für Solo-Piano auf. Seit 1981 lehrt er als außerordentlicher Professor an der City University of New York. Er nahm sporadisch weitere Alben auf, u.a. mit Joe Chambers und Steve Coleman. 1991 verfasste er ein Stück zu Ehren von Art Tatum, der einen frühen Einfluss auf seine Musik ausgeübt hatte. Stilistisch bewegt er sich vielfältig in den Bereichen Hard Bop, Postbop und Free Jazz. Obwohl er von Musikerkollegen hochgeschätzt und viel engagiert wird, ist er dem breiten Jazzpublikum ziemlich unbekannt.
