  • Stanley Raymond Bahnsen was a Major League Baseball pitcher for the New York Yankees (1966 and 1968-71), Chicago White Sox (1972-75), Oakland Athletics (1975-77), Montreal Expos (1977-81), California Angels (1982) and Philadelphia Phillies (1982). In 1968 he was named the American League Rookie of the Year with a 17-12 won-loss record. Bahnsen appeared in 37 games, starting 34, and pitched 10 complete games. He tossed one shutout, a 12-strikeout, no-walk three-hitter at Fenway Park against the Boston Red Sox, and pitched a total of 267-plus innings. He allowed 216 hits, 72 runs (61 earned) and 14 homers. He struck out a career-high 162 batters and walked 68, and compiled a team-best 2.05 earned-run average. After being traded to the White Sox for infielder Rich McKinney in December 1971, Bahnsen teamed with Wilbur Wood to become true workhorses under pitching coach Johnny Sain. Bahnsen went 21-16 record in his first season with the South Siders. The next season, Bahnsen won 18 and lost 21. In one of those 18 wins, a 4-0 shutout over the Cleveland Indians on August 21 at Municipal Stadium, Bahnsen had a no-hitter broken up with two out in the ninth on a Walt Williams single, the only hit he would allow. He made 83 starts in those first two seasons with the White Sox. With Wood starting 49 games in 1972 and 48 more in 1973, Wood and Bahnsen started well over half their team's games. For his career, Bahnsen posted a 146-149 record. Other statistics: 574 games, 327 games started, 73 complete games, 16 shutouts, 90 games finished, 20 saves, 2,529 innings pitched, 2,440 hits allowed, 1,127 runs allowed, 1,013 earned runs allowed, 223 home runs allowed, 924 walks (59 intentional), 1,359 strikeouts, 34 hit batsmen, 89 wild pitches, 10,701 batters faced, three balks and a 3.60 ERA.
