According to the band's vocalist Anthony Kiedis, Stadium Arcadium was originally scheduled to be a trilogy of albums each released six months apart, but was eventually condensed into a double album. The record was critically praised for integrating musical styles from several aspects of the band's career. The album gained the band seven Grammy Award nominations in 2007 including an award for Best Rock Album. It was the most nominations that the band had garnered in their 25-year career. Kiedis attributed the album's success to less abrasive dynamics within the band, saying that the band's "chemistry, when it comes to writing, is better than ever. There was always a struggle to dominate lyrically. But we are now confident enough in who we are, so everybody feels more comfortable contributing more and more valuable, quality stuff".

Die beiden CDs des Doppel-Albums tragen die Namen Jupiter und Mars. John Frusciante hat nach eigenen Angaben seine Soli bis auf einige Ausnahmen (z. B. Dani California) auf diesem Album im Studio frei improvisiert. Ihm werden auch von den anderen Bandmitgliedern die größten kreativen Anteile an diesem Album zugesprochen, das man in der gleichen Villa, in der auch Blood Sugar Sex Magik aufgenommen wurde, einspielte. Bassist Flea sagte im Interview mit dem Rolling-Stone-Magazin, das Album sei „bei weitem das Beste“, das man je gemacht habe. Quelques belles trouvailles aussi, avec Charlie, Make You Feel Better, Snow et So Much I. Flea vient rajouter sa touche magique à la basse, qui donne tout son sens à la musique des Peppers.
