Spezifikations- und Beschreibungssprache) ist eine von der ITU-T, d.h. dem Telekommunikations-Standardisierungs-Sektor der Internationalen Fernmeldeunion in den so genannten Standards (Recommendations) Z.100ff definierte Modellierungssprache. Sie ist im Telekommunikationsbereich verbreitet um (verteilte) Systeme mittels erweiterter Zustandsmaschinen (Prozesse) zu beschreiben. Die verschiedenen Prozesse werden über Kanäle verbunden und können darüber Signale austauschen und sich damit gegenseitig beeinflussen. Ein in SDL spezifiziertes System kann man entweder als Text (Textual Phrase Representation/PR) oder in graphischer Form (Graphic Representation/GR) darstellen.

Ce langage a pour objectif de décrire de manière non ambigüe les protocoles de télécommunications. On retrouve ainsi des descriptions SDL dans les standards de l'ETSI tels que le X25 ou le GSM. SDL est mis à jour tous les 4 ans et on considère que sa première version stable et utilisable est sa version de 1988. On notera les étapes importantes suivantes: 1988: première version stable et complète, 1992: introduction de l'orientation objet, 1996: Introduction des Remote Procedure Call, 2000: Introduction de diagrammes UML, 2004: Addendum pour assurer la compatibilité ascendante et alignement pour un futur profile UML.

Språket är fullständigt och konsistent, vilket möjliggör generering av körbar kod från en SDL-modell – det går alltså att använda som ett programspråk. Språket har både en textuell och en grafisk notation, SDL/PR respektive SDL/GR SDL används ofta i kombination med MSC, ASN.1 och TTCN.
