  • This article is about the phonology of the Spanish language. It deals with current phonology and phonetics as well as with historical developments thereof. Unless otherwise noted, statements refer to Castilian Spanish, the standard dialect used on radio and television, in Spain (for details, see the articles on History of the Spanish language and Spanish dialects and varieties). Spanish has many allophones, so it is important here to distinguish phonemes (written in slashes / /) and corresponding allophones (written in brackets).

A többi újlatin nyelvéhez képest viszonylag egyszerű: mindössze öt – tisztán ejtett – magánhangzót tartanak számon, a mássalhangzók között pedig nincsenek meg a többi újlatin nyelvre jellemző c, dz, dzs, s, z, zs hangok. Ugyanakkor az újlatin nyelvekhez hasonlóan a spanyolban megtalálhatóak a kettőshangzók, amelyek közül legjellemzőbbek az ie és ue (a latin rövid és folytatásaiként), valamint szintén létezik néhány palatális mássalhangzó, ilyenek a ch, ll, y, ñ. A szócikkünkben a sztenderd nyelvváltozatok kiejtésének leírására törekedtünk, szükségszerűen utalva a különböző regionális, illetve népies ejtésmódokra, valamint a spanyolországi és a latin-amerikai nyelvváltozatok közötti lényegesebb eltérésekre.
