Southwestern Illinois College is a community college and the sixth largest in Illinois, with campuses located in Belleville, Granite City, and Red Bud, plus 26 off-campus sites located throughout the district. In 1965, the Illinois General Assembly passed the Illinois Junior College Act, which created community college districts throughout the state. Area residents voted to establish a Class I junior college, Belleville Area College, which opened July 1, 1967. In 1999, a vote to change the name of Belleville Area College was passed. Starting January 1, 2000, the new name would be Southwestern Illinois College.
