The loss of Sophie brought about a deep period of mourning and suffering in Novalis' life. Even so, he became engaged to Julie von Charpentier in December 1798. The depth of Sophie’s love for Novalis is uncertain given her young age. Some of her diary entries, found in Wm. Ludwig Tieck's biography of Novalis describes Sophie, saying: "Even as a child, she gave an impression which--because it was so gracious and spiritually lovely--we must call superearthly or heavenly, while through this radiant and almost transparent countenance of hers we would be struck with the fear that it was too tender and delicately woven for this life, that it was death or immortality which looked at us so penetratingly from those shining eyes; and only too often a rapid withering motion turned our fear into an actual reality."

Novalis teilte seinem Bruder Erasmus in einem Brief darüber mit, dass eine „Viertelstunde“ über sein Leben entschieden habe. Am 17. März 1795, ihrem dreizehnten Geburtstag, gab es dann schon ein inoffizielles Verlöbnis mit Friedrich von Hardenberg. Im November 1795 wurde Sophie schwer krank, erholte sich aber scheinbar wieder. Nach drei schweren Operationen (damals noch ohne Narkose) zwischen Mai und Juli 1796 verstarb sie jedoch am 19. März 1797. Die Todesanzeige ihrer Familie zu Sophies Ableben erschien in der Leipziger Zeitung am Samstag, dem 25. März 1797. Sophie hatte eine Schwester, Caroline von Kühn, und eine Stiefschwester, Wilhelmine von Thümmel.
