De esta manera, Luneburgo permanecería en manos de la familia sin ningún tipo de complicaciones. Sin embargo, el matrimonio fue terriblemente desdichado. La familia inmediata de Jorge Luis, especialmente su madre, la electora Sofía, odiaba y despreciaba a Sofía Dorotea, porque su madre era una mujer común y había sido la amante de su padre antes de casarse con él. Fue Königsmarck quien la ayudó en sus dos intentos de fuga de Hannover, no pudiendo comprobarse hasta la actualidad si en realidad fueron o no amantes. En 1694, el conde desapareció, al parecer, asesinado por órdenes de Jorge Luis. El matrimonio de Sofía y Jorge es disuelto, no bajo el cargo de adulterio -de los cuales Jorge sí era culpable-, sino bajo la acusación de que Sofía había "abandonado" a su marido. Con el consentimiento del propio padre de Sofía, Jorge Luis la encarcela en el castillo de Ahlden, separándola de sus hijos, a los cuales no volvería a ver nunca más. Además, le fue prohibido volverse a casar y comunicarse con sus padres. Pero a pesar de todo esto, le fue permitido tener servidumbre y una pensión, y también podía pasear en su carruaje fuera del castillo, pero con extremada vigilancia. Jorge Luis le confirió el título de princesa de Ahlden. Murió en Ahlden, tras 32 años de prisión, el 23 de noviembre de 1726, a los 60 años de edad.
