The social environment (context), also known as the milieu, is the identical or similar social positions and social roles as a whole that influence the individuals of a group. The social environment of an individual is the culture that he or she was educated and/or lives in, and the people and institutions with whom the person interacts. A given social environment is likely to create a feeling of solidarity amongst its members, who are more likely to keep together, trust and help one another.

Młodzi ludzie żyjący, tam mieli antyprzykład swoich rodziców, którzy nie tworzyli w nich pozytywnego obrazu nauki i pracy. Efektem braku motywacji stał się brak wykształcenia oraz niechęć do walki o swoją przyszłość. Bieda stała się dziedziczna. Na determinizmie społecznym opierała się ideologia komunizmu. Komuniści zakładali, że poprawa środowiska społecznego uczyni ludzi lepszymi: Byt określa świadomość – Karol Marks Poprawienie bytu robotników miało uczynić z nich lepszych ludzi zdolnych do altruistycznego poświęcenia dla socjalistycznego państwa. Komuniści zakładali, że dzięki właściwemu środowisku robotnicy nie będą potrzebować materialnej motywacji do ciężkiej pracy.
