The Social Democratic Party is a center-right political party in Portugal. It is commonly known by its initials, PSD, however in voting ballots its acronym appears as PPD/PSD, the first three letters coming from the party's first name Partido Popular Democrático (Democratic People's Party). The party has 75 of 230 seats of the Assembly of the Republic, and has lost the most recent Portuguese legislative election, while governing in coalition with the People's Party.

The party has 75 of 230 seats of the Assembly of the Republic, and has lost the most recent Portuguese legislative election, while governing in coalition with the People's Party. The current leader is Manuela Ferreira Leite, who was elected on May 31 2008. The party's name can be misleading: although its first official political position, after its foundation as the People's Democratic Party, was centre-left and adhered to social democracy and populism, it is nowadays a party of the centre-right and does not advocate social democracy in any usual sense of the term. However the party still adheres to populism and is still its main unifying ideology. The party left the Liberal International in 1996 and their delegates to the European Parliament have, since the late 1990s, sat with the European People's Party (EPP), along with the Conservative and Christian Democratic parties of many European countries. Previously, they had sat with the European Liberal, Democrat and Reform Party. The party publishes the weekly Povo Livre (Free People).

Mai 2008 wurde Manuela Ferreira Leite durch Urwahl der Mitglieder zur neuen Parteivorsitzenden gewählt. Sie löste Luís Filipe Menezes ab, der am 17. April 2008 seinen Rücktritt erklärt hatte. Ferreira Leite wurde mit rund 38 % der Stimmen gewählt. Sie hatte drei männliche Gegenkandidaten. Die PSD ist Herausgeber der Zeitung „Povo Livre“ (freies Volk).

La seva ideologia és confusa, ja que el PSD nasqué com un partit socialdemòcrata no marxista, malgrat que des de 1979 començà a aplicar polítiques conservadores i liberals i pactant amb partits democristians com el Centre Democràtic i Social i el Partit Popular Monàrquic. Amb aquests darrers, el PSD formà la coalició electoral Aliança Democràtica i governà des de 1980 fins a 1983. Aquell any passà a l'oposició però el 1985 tornà al poder amb Aníbal Cavaco Silva, el qual es mantingué en el govern fins el 1995. En les eleccions de 2002 José Manuel Durão Barroso guanyà les eleccions amb minoria i es veié obligat a pactar amb el Centre Democràtic i Social de Paulo Portas per formar govern. Tanmateix el 2005 tornà a perdre el poder contra el Partit Socialista de José Sócrates que per primera vegada aconseguí la majoria absoluta. En l'actualitat, i des dels anys 80, se'l pot definir com un partit de diferents tendències ideològiques al voltant del centre i la dreta, passant pel liberalisme, el conservadorisme, el centrisme, el nacionalisme, etc...
