- A smart mob is a form of self-structuring social organization through technology-mediated, intelligent emergent behavior. The concept was introduced by Howard Rheingold in his book Smart Mobs: The Next Social Revolution. According to Rheingold, smart mobs are an indication of the evolving communication technologies that will empower the people. In 2002, the "smart mob" concept was highlighted in the New York Times "Year in Ideas. " These growing technologies include the Internet, computer-mediated communication such as Internet Relay Chat, and wireless devices like mobile phones and personal digital assistants. Methodologies like peer to peer networks and pervasive computing are also changing the ways in which people organize and share information. A smart mob is a group that, contrary to the usual connotations of a mob, behaves intelligently or efficiently because of its exponentially increasing network links. This network enables people to connect to information and others, allowing a form of social coordination. Parallels are made to, for instance, slime molds. One reason for the rise of smart mobs is the ever decreasing cost of increasingly powerful microprocessors which have allowed them to permeate throughout society — they are embedded in everything from boxes to clothes. Depending on how the technology is used, smart mobs may be beneficial or detrimental to society. Rheingold warns of the use of the technology by some to create a society similar to the one seen in George Orwell's 1984 or by terrorists for their malicious purposes. Smart Mobs are sometimes manipulated by the dispatchers who control the 'mobbing system' (ie, those who own the contact list and the means to forward instant messages to a group) and induced to cause distress and aggravation to individuals who have been targeted or singled out for whatever reason. There is a tendency to keep the dynamics of smart mobbing 'covert', and not to discuss such incidents on the internet.

Per estensione si può intendere un qualunque apparecchio o tecnologia mobile senza fili, dotato di software in grado di connettersi in rete e capace di ricevere e dare istruzioni e/o informazioni secondo la programmazione ricevuta. Howard Rheingold, studioso dell'impatto sociale e delle nuove tecnologie, nel suo libro Smart mobs, tecnologie senza fili, la rivoluzione sociale prossima ventura amplia il significato di questo termine definendo smart mobs come "folla/moltitudine intelligente", evidenziando così l'importanza sociale dell'utilizzo di massa di queste tecnologie. La formula, infatti, rimanda ad un gioco di parole tra il termine smart che rimanda a intelligente o brillante e il termine mobs che rimanda a connotazioni negative come quello di folla disordinata. Lo sviluppo della banda larga e l'introduzione di tecnologia per accedere alla rete ad un costo notevolmente più basso di un PC, hanno modificato il modo di comunicare di tante persone. È stato soprattutto la possibilità di inviare velocemente messaggi di testo a dare notevole impulso a questo tipo di tecnologia. Uno dei cambiamenti sociali più rilevanti è la possibilità di essere raggiungibile in ogni momento (anche quando si passeggia o si sta percorrendo il tragitto casa-lavoro) e che nelle relazioni viene data sempre meno importanza al luogo fisico e alla puntualità. Questo tipo di tecnologia è in continua evoluzione: dagli smartphone e dai palmari attuali si arriverà probabilmente a chip contenuti negli oggetti, negli elettrodomestici e nei vestiti delle nostre abitazioni che consentiranno la loro connessione permanentemente alla nuova rete globale che si sta sviluppando
- スマートモブ（Smart mob）とは、『スマートモブズ―<群がる>モバイル族の挑戦』でハワード・ラインゴールドが示した概念。抽象的な概念に対して、その全体を指す場合にはスマートモブズ（Smart mobs）と複数形で表記される。本書によれば、携帯電話のSMSやEメール、PDAなどの無線通信が可能なモバイル機器を身につけた個人が集団となり、従来であれば集合行為が不可能であった状況下でも、互いに見知らぬ者同士が協調して大きな力を発揮する新しい社会秩序が生まれる。これは有益な場合に限らず、モブズは暴徒ともなりうる。また、スマートモブが巨大な監視装置になる可能性についても警告している。 著者は2000年3月に渋谷のハチ公前で、携帯電話を操る日本の若者を見てこの概念の着想を得たという。
- Bystry tłum - pojęcie zaproponowane przez Amerykanina Howarda Rheingolda w książce Smart Mobs: The Next Social Revolution, na określenie nowych form zachowań zbiorowych, które są możliwe dzięki wykorzystaniu nowoczesnych technologii komunikacyjnych, jak internet i telefonia komórkowa, do koordynacji działań tłumu i innych form działania zbiorowego. Cytowanym przez Rheingolda przykładem bystrego tłumu jest pokojowa demonstracja zorganizowana w 2001 w Manili stolicy Filipin na placu Epifanio de los Santas Avenue (znanym jako Edsa), którą udało się przeprowadzić dzięki rozsyłanym przez ruch opozycyjny wiadomościom SMS o treści: "Go 2EDSA, Wear black" (idź na EDSA, ubierz się na czarno). W ciągu 75 minut udało się zgromadzić 20 tys. osób. Innym przykładem bystrego tłumu jest tzw. błyskawiczny tłum. Zdaniem Rheingolda cechy bystrego tłumu ma także wiele demonstracji antyglobalistów.

Это определение было предложено Говардом Рейнгольдом в его книге Умные толпы: Новая социальная революция. По Рейнгольду, «умные толпы» это следствие широкого распространения и развития коммуникационных технологий. В 2002 году концепция «умных толп» была освещена в New York Times в разделе "Year in Ideas".
