- Sisal is a seaport town in the state of Yucatán, Mexico. It was the principal port of Yucatán during the henequen boom, later overshadowed when the more modern port of Progreso was built to the east. It lent its name to the agave-derived sisal fiber which was shipped through it. The town is about 53 km north north-west of Mérida, the state capital. By law when the Yucatán was part of New Spain, all commerce went through the port of Campeche. The residents of Mérida petititioned for a port closer to the capital, and this was granted by Spanish royal decree on 13 February 1810. The new port of Sisal was founded in 1811, and has a late colonial era fortress, the "Castle of Sisal", and an old lighthouse. After Yucatán's independence from Spain commerce in the port grew rapidly, and by 1845 was shipping cargos with twice the value that had previously gone through Campeche. After the development of Progreso, Sisal's importance declined and today is a small fishing village, visited by some for its beach. Currently (Dec 2006) the state government is working to return this port to the splendor of centuries past through the development of projects focused on tourism as declared the governor Patricio Patron Laviada. With the planning being done by a U.S. company and to be developed during the next governing term. - Sisal es un puerto mexicano ubicado en el litoral nor-poniente del estado de [[Yucatán], en el Golfo de México y localizado en el municipio de Hunucmá. Sisal fue históricamente el principal puerto del estado de Yucatán desde el Siglo XVI hasta inicios del Siglo XX, cuando fue sustituido por el mucho más moderno puerto de Progreso, fundado para absorber el manejo de la entonces industria principal del estado, que era la industria henequenera. El nombre de este puerto (Sisal) fue posteriormente atribuido a una variedad particular de henequén, el agave sisalana, cuya fibra es el principal producto que se exporta de la industria henequenera brasileña. El pueblo se encuentra a 53 km. al noroeste de Mérida, la capital del estado. Durante el tiempo de la colonia, la ley española vigente establecía que el único puerto por el que podía comerciar la provincia era el de Campeche, entonces parte de Yucatán. Sin embargo, debido a la lejanía de Campeche con Mérida y a la rivalidad histórica entre ambas poblaciones, las autoridadades españolas permitieron que fuera habilitado un puerto más cercano a la ciudad capital, el cual fue oficialmente establecido el año de 1811. Históricamente, sin embargo, el puerto de Sisal existió aún en tiempo de los mayas quienes lo utilizaron durante el el cacicazgo de los Ah Canul tal y como se detalla en el Códice de Calkiní. Durante el periodo colonial, inclusive, fue construido un fuerte para la defensa del puerto, al que en 1845 se agregó un faro. Tanto el fuerte como el faro subsisten hasta la actualidad, constituyendo un atractivo turístico. Posteriormente a la independencia de México, Sisal, sin las restricciones comerciales coloniales, floreció aún más, superando a San Francisco de Campeche en actividad portuaria y comercial, lo cual contribuiría a la tensión política que condujo a la separación del estado de Campeche de Yucatán a mediados del siglo XIX. Más tarde, al establecerse el nuevo puerto de Progreso, Sisal decayó notablemente, hasta convertirse en la pequeña localidad pesquera que es el día de hoy. Existen en la actualidad nuevos proyectos para desarrollar Sisal con un puerto de abrigo dedicado al turismo y a la pesca deportiva.
- Sisal is een havenstadje in Yucatán, in het oosten van Mexico. De stad ligt aan de Golf van Mexico, 53 kilometer ten noordwesten van de staatshoofdstad Mérida. Sisal heeft ongeveer 1672 inwoners (census 2005) en valt onder de gemeente Hunucmá. Sisal werd gesticht in 1811 door de Spaanse autoriteiten, die Mérida een zeehaven wilden geven die dichterbij was dan Campeche, op de plaats van een oude nederzetting. De stad groeide explosief toen in Yucatán de productie van de sisalvezel op gang kwam, die naar de stad genoemd is. Aan het eind van de 19e eeuw nam Progreso de functie van belangrijkste haven over en raakte Sisal in verval. Tegenwoordig zijn de belangrijkste inkomsten visserij en toerisme.
