Coady ran unsuccessfully for the Liberal party for the riding of St. John's South in the Canada general elections of 2004 and 2006 and lost to Conservative incumbent Loyola Hearn both times. She ran again for a third time in the 2008 general election and won a tight race against the New Democratic Party 's Ryan Cleary.
