He was born Simeon Ivanovich Antonov, of Russian Orthodox parents who came from the village of Sovsk in Russia's Tambov region. At the age of twenty-seven, after a period of military service, he left his native Russia and came to the monastic state of Mt. Athos (an autonomous peninsula in Greece) where he became a monk at the Monastery of St. Panteleimon, a Russian Orthodox monastery known as "Rossikon", and was given the name Silouan (the Russian version of the Biblical name Silvanus. ) An ardent ascetic, he received the grace of unceasing prayer and saw Christ in a vision. After long years of spiritual trial, he acquired great humility and inner stillness. He prayed and wept for the whole world as for himself, and he put the highest value on love for enemies. He became widely known as a starets. Thomas Merton has described Silouan as “the most authentic monk of the twentieth century. ” St Silouan died on September 24, 1938. His memory is celebrated on September 24. Though barely literate, he was sought out by pilgrims for his wise counsel. His writings were edited by his disciple and pupil, Archimandrite Sophrony. Father Sophrony has written the life of the saint along with a record of St. Silouan's teachings in the book Saint Silouan the Athonite. Starets Silouan was glorified to sainthood by the Ecumenical Patriarchate in 1987.

Nel 1911 ricevette il titolo di schimonaco, titolo riservato agli asceti più esperti. Lavorò nel latifondo del monastero nei pressi di Salonicco chiamato Kalamareia e poi al mulino del suo Monastero. Poi si ritirò nella skita del vecchio Rossikon, dove si ritiravano molti asceti e Starec. Dopo un anno e mezzo di vita ascetica, venne richiamato al Monastero, per assumervi l’incarico di economo alle costruzioni. Morì il 24 settembre 1938. Fu canonizzato il 26 novembre del 1987 dal Patriarca di Costantinopoli Dimitrios I. È l'ultimo asceta canonizzato del Monte Athos. Ebbe la grazia della preghiera continua ed ebbe la visione del Cristo oltre a soffrire molto da parte di demoni. Ma l'esperienza mistica che più lo marcò, avvenne attorno all'anno 1906, quando in preda a grande sconforto per non riuscire a estirpare i suoi sentimenti di orgoglio, così si rivolse a Dio: Signore, tu vedi che cerco di pregarti con spirito puro, ma il demonio me lo impedisce. Ricevette allora nel suo cuore questa risposta: Gli orgogliosi devono sempre soffrire da parte dei demoni. Silvano rispose: Allora, Signore, dimmi cosa devo fare perché la mia anima diventi pura. Di nuovo ricevette la risposta: Tieni il tuo spirito in inferno e non disperare mai. Nonostante non avesse ricevuto una istruzione superiore, assunse grande fama presso i pellegrini che lo cercavano per i suoi utili consigli, tra essi anche altri prelati, vescovi e cattedratici. Il monaco cattolico Thomas Merton lo definì il più autentico monaco del ventesimo secolo.. .
