- Sign o' the Times (stylized as Sign “☮” the Times) is a studio album by musician Prince, released March 31, 1987 on the Paisley Park record label. The album is the follow up to Parade, and Prince's first "solo" album following his departure from The Revolution; the symbol between the quotes is a peace sign. The double album was a synthesis of three projects from 1986, including some work with The Revolution. The bulk of the tracks originate from the final Revolution project known as Dream Factory and a later solo project called Camille. These projects, along with some other songs, merged into a 22-track, 3-LP opus called Crystal Ball. Prince's record company, Warner Bros. Records, balked at the idea of a 3-LP album, considering the lukewarm performance of Parade, and Prince's second film, Under the Cherry Moon, and forced Prince to trim the album down. The album yielded three top-ten hits, the most from a Prince album since 1984's Purple Rain. Thematically, Sign o' the Times covers the depressing state of the world in the title track, gender identity/androgyny in "If I Was Your Girlfriend", party funk in "Housequake", sexual lust in "It", and spiritual enlightenment in "The Cross". It also showcases Prince's fourth live song released on an album, "It's Gonna Be a Beautiful Night" (the other three being songs from Purple Rain; "I Would Die 4 U", "Baby I'm a Star", and "Purple Rain", all recorded on August 3, 1983 at First Avenue in Minneapolis, MN). Though selling modestly, somewhat akin to Parade, Sign o' the Times was almost universally applauded by critics and has since been frequently identified as Prince's finest album, and a standard of comparison for all of his albums to follow. In 1989, Time Out magazine ranked it as the greatest album of all time. It was ranked #16 on the New Musical Express list of the All Time Top 100 Albums, 3rd in Hot Press magazine's list of the 100 Best Albums of All Time, and #35 on VH1's 100 Greatest Albums. The album was also placed 8th on Nieuwe Revu's Top 100 Albums of All Time. The Times listed Sign o' the Times as the 29th greatest album of all time. In 2003, the album was ranked number 93 on Rolling Stone magazine's list of The 500 Greatest Albums of All Time.

Nach drei Alben, auf denen der Multiinstrumentalist von der Band The Revolution begleitet worden war, ist dies Prince' erstes Soloalbum seit 1982. Stilistisch betrachtet gilt Sign o’ the Times als Prince' vielseitigstes Werk. Es finden sich unter anderem Elemente aus Rock, Pop, Soul, Funk, Dance, Contemporary R&B, Electronica und sogar Jazz. Die Songs auf Sign o’ the Times stammen alle schon von vor 1987 und sollten eigentlich für andere Projekte verwendet werden, die jedoch nie zustande kamen, unter anderem ein geplantes Soloalbum namens Camille und ein Album mit The Revolution, das Dream Factory heißen sollte, weshalb auch die Band auf einem der Tracks, It's Gonna Be a Beautiful Night, noch als Begleitband fungiert. Ursprünglich hatte Prince vorgehabt, das Album als 3-LP-Set unter dem Namen Crystal Ball zu veröffentlichen, jedoch waren Warner Bros. Records, die an Paisley Park kommerziell beteiligt waren, nicht einverstanden, weshalb Prince es auf die Länge eines Doppelalbums zusammenkürzen musste. Im Vergleich zu früheren Alben von Prince war Sign o’ the Times ein kommerziell eher geringer Erfolg, obwohl es 1990 mit Platin ausgezeichnet wurde. So erreichte es in den Billboard 200 nur Platz 6, während von den drei vorhergehenden Alben mit The Revolution zwei, Purple Rain und Around the World in a Day, die Charts getoppt hatten, und auch das Vorgängeralbum Parade immerhin Platz 3 erreicht hatte. In den amerikanischen R&B-Charts erreichte Sign o’ the Times, wie auch in Großbritannien Platz 4. Allerdings wurde das Album von der Kritik hoch gelobt und gilt inzwischen nicht nur als Prince' bis dato bestes Werk, sondern auch als ein Klassiker des Rock und Pop. So war es auch in der 2003 vom Rolling Stone veröffentlichten Liste der 500 besten Alben aller Zeiten enthalten, wo es Platz 93 einnahm. Insgesamt vier Singles koppelten Paisley Park von Sign o’ the Times aus. Der Titelsong erschien noch vor Veröffentlichung des eigentlichen Albums am 18. Februar 1987 mit La, La, La, He, He, Hee als B-Seite. Er erreichte Platz 3 in den US-amerikanischen Billboard Hot 100, Platz 10 in den UK Top 40. Am 6. Mai kam If I Was Your Girlfriend auf den Markt, das in den Vereinigten Staaten nicht über einen Platz 67 hinauskam, in Großbritannien jedoch immerhin die Top 20 erreichte. B-Seite war Shockadelica. U Got the Look wurde am 14. Juli veröffentlicht. Mit einem Platz 2 war es die in den Vereinigten Staaten erfolgreichste Single des Albums, erreichte in Großbritannien jedoch nur Platz 11. Housequake wurde als B-Seite verwendet. Am 3. November schließlich erschien I Could Never Take the Place of Your Man, das es nur knapp in die amerikanischen Top 10 schaffte. In Großbritannien reichte es nur für einen Platz 29. Allerdings tauchte die B-Seite Hot Thing 1988 in den Billboard Hot 100 auf, wenn sie auch über einen Platz 63 nicht hinauskam.
