Contrary to most consumer Bayer sensor based cameras, the Foveon X3 sensor does without anti-aliasing filters and is not susceptible to color aliasing due to the RGB color stacked pixels. Foveon sensors don't form artifacts like Bayer sensors; sharpening tools can be applied to create high resolution images. Foveon images are easily enlarged without the same artifacts and degradation seen in Bayer sensored images. The circular infrared dust-protector-UV/IR-blocking filter can be easily removed, converting the SD14 into an infrared-sensitive camera.

Die Verwendung von M42-Objektiven ist mittels Adapter möglich, wobei diese dann um 90° gedreht sind. Anders als ihre Vorgängerinnen verfügt sie über ein eingebautes Blitzgerät, kann Bilder im JPEG-Modus speichern und verfügt nicht mehr über das Sigma-Außenbajonett der Vorgänger (für das aber auch nie Objektive angeboten wurden). Das Sigma-Innenbajonett blieb kompatibel. Die Anzahl der Bildpunkte des speziellen CMOS-Bildsensors beträgt für jede einzelne Farbe rot, grün und blau etwa 4,7 Millionen, so dass für jede Aufnahme etwa 14 Millionen Messwerte, entsprechend etwa 9 MP eines konventionellen Sensors, zur Verfügung stehen.
