As the Albanians evacuated with their families, however, the Ottomans reneged on this promise, killing the men and enslaving the women and children, taking many of the younger women as wives. A year later the Ottoman forces captured Venetian-controlled Shkodër, the last Albanian castle free of Ottoman control. After this, no Albanian force would ever again threaten the Ottoman Empire. Most of the Albanian population would convert to Islam, and Albania remained a part of the Ottoman Empire until the early 1900s.
