  • The Siege of Cuneo was fought on 28 June, 1691 during Nine Years' War in Piedmont-Savoy, modern-day northern Italy. The siege was part of King Louis XIV’s campaign against Victor Amadeus, the Duke of Savoy, who had sided with the Grand Alliance the previous year. Early in the campaign, the French commander, Marshal Catinat, seized the County of Nice, before moving into the Plain of Piedmont; but whilst attempting to take Cuneo, French forces suffered a major setback, losing between 700 and 800 men. In December, French forces took Montmélian – the Duke of Savoy’s last stronghold west of the Alps – but Catinat’s small and ill-supplied army campaigning on the plain, was unable to winter east of the mountains. With the death in July of Louis’ belligerent War Minister, Louvois, and Catinat’s army forced onto the defensive, the King offered Amadeus generous peace terms. But the Duke, who had by now received substantial Imperial reinforcements from the Empire, considered himself strong enough to continue hostilities.

Le décès en juillet du ministre de la guerre de Louis XIV, Louvois, conjugué à la situation difficile de l'armée de Catinat, convainc le roi de France de proposer un traité de paix avantageux au duc Victor-Amédée. Mais celui-ci a entretemps reçu des renforts importants du Saint-Empire romain germanique et s'estime suffisamment fort pour négliger l'offre de paix.
