Sichuan, known formerly in the West by its postal map spellings of Szechwan or Szechuan is a province in Southwest China with its capital in Chengdu. The current name of the province, "四川", is an abbreviation of "四川路" (Sì Chuānlù), or "Four circuits of rivers", which is itself abbreviated from "川峡四路" (Chuānxiá Sìlù), or "Four circuits of rivers and gorges", named after the division of the existing circuit into four during the Northern Song Dynasty.

Hele landskapet er oppdyrket, terrassert og kunstig vannet. Det er meget tett befolket, men ettersom det er omgitt av fjell har det vært meget isolert igjennom historien. Fra 1950-årene har omfattende vei- og jernbanebyggering åpnet adgangen til området. Storbyen Chongqing ble utskilt fra provinsen i 1997 og danner nå en selvstendig byprovins. Det nordlige Sichuan ble rammet av et jordskjelv på en momentmagnitude på 7,8 den 12. mai 2008; episenteret var i fylket Wenchuan. Det samme området har flere ganger tidligere blitt rammet av jordskjelv av sterk styrke.
