- Shervashidze was a princely family in Abkhazia which can be traced at least as far back as the twelfth century. Although this is quite clearly a Georgian form (particularly, the typical –dze suffix meaning "a son"), the family is said to have derived from the Shirvanshahs, a dynasty of Shirvan in what is now Azerbaijan. According to the medieval Georgian chronicles, the Shirvanese princes were granted the possessions in Abkhazia after the powerful and militarily successful Georgian potentate David IV the Builder took hold of Shirvan in 1124. Later in history, the Shervashidze had another, purely Abkhazian clan name, Chachba. Modern Abkhaz historians argue the above genealogy and claim the family was of local origin referring to an oral Abkhaz tradition which holds that the Shervashidze/Chachba were related to the earlier clan of Anchabadze/Achba. The first representative of the dynasty assumed the princely powers under the authority of the Georgian kings circa 1325. It was not, however, until the final decomposition of the unified Georgian feudal state in the late 15th century, when the Abkhazian princes obtained their full independence, only to soon become vassals of the Ottomans. The Turkish overlordship brought major changes in their palace culture and political leanings, with the Shervashidze gradually losing their ties with the Christian Georgian nobility. In the late 18th century, the Shervashidze princes embraced Islam, but shifted back and forth across the religious divide, as the Russians and Ottomans struggled for controlling the area. The pro-Russian orientation prevailed, and Abkhazia joined Imperial Russia as an autonomous princedom in 1810 while the Shervashidzes were confirmed in the Russian princely rank. The end of the Caucasian War terminated the Shervashidze rule and the last remnants of the Abkhazian autonomy were eliminated in 1866.

Branca de Nabanevi, fundada per Bejan Shirvashidze, germà de Manushihr de Samurzakan i efímera. Branca de Otkara, fundada pel príncep Rostam (Khutunica Shirvashidze) senyor de Sukhumi i que va continuar el seu fill Tulakh Shirvashidze originant la branca Shirvashidze-Tulaqipa Otkara. Branca de Gulisti, fundada per Inal Bey Shirvashidze, senyor de Gulisti, segon fill de Djighesti Shirvashidze de Abkhàzia. Els seus successors foren els prínceps Shirvashidze-Inalipa de Gulisti. - La familia Chachba o Shervashidze fue una familia noble de Abjasia, que de acuerdo con las últimas investigaciones, se remonta al siglo XII. A pesar de ser conocida como Shervashidze, llevando claramente la forma georgiana del típico sufijo "dze", que significa "hijo de", la familia puede derivar de los Shirvanashas, dinastía de Shirvan, en la actual Azerbaiyán. De acuerdo con las crónicas medievales georgianas, los príncipes shirvaneses le fueron prometidas tierras en Abjasia después de la campaña militar del potentado georgiano David IV de Georgia, el "constructor", tomó Shivan en 1124. Происходит от правителей (шахов) государства Ширван, откуда грузинская форма фамилии. Один из династии Ширваншахов Кесранидов, (вероятно, из семьи Манучихра III ибн Афридуна), захваченный в 1120-1123 в плен грузинским царём, был назначен на должность Цхумского эристава вместо эристава из рода Ачба. До этого времени правителями Абхазии были только Ачба, и это имя стало нарицательным, синонимом слова «государь». Поэтому новые правители Шервашидзе среди абхазов получили название Ач-Ачба — «Ачба над Ачба» или, согласно абхазской фонетике, Чачба. Ветвями рода являются кахетинские князья Шервашидзе, Эристави-Гурийские и кабардинские Мурзакановы.
