Sheena is a 1984 Columbia Pictures film based on the comic character of the same name. An hybrid of action-adventure and soap opera-style drama, Sheena, shot on location in Kenya, told the tale of a female version of Tarzan who was raised in the fictional African country of Tigora by the equally fictional Zambouli tribe. Starring Tanya Roberts, Ted Wass, and Trevor Thomas, and directed by John Guillermin and written by Lorenzo Semple Jr.. It was produced by Paul Aratow.

Ihre erfolgreiche Comicserie erschien in der Zeit von 1938 bis 1953 und umfasste insgesamt 186 Ausgaben. Sheena hieß eigentlich Janet Ames und stellte eine Art Entsprechung zum Tarzan dar, als weißes Mädchen, das von „wilden“ Menschen aus einem afrikanischen Stamm erzogen wurde. Sie lehrten sie kämpfen, jagen und schamanische Rituale feiern. Die Comicheldin war wild und unbezähmbar – triumphierte so über Löwen, Panther, Leoparden und tobsüchtig gewordene Elefanten. Sie legte den bösen Weißen, die in ihr Reich eindrangen, das Handwerk, während ihr Freund Bob nur dazu da war, in jede erdenkliche Bredouille zu geraten und ihrem heldenhaften Tun stets mit Bewunderung zuzusehen. Sheena ist eine taffe junge Frau, die Tatkraft, Initiative und Mut zeigt – und somit ihrerseits die Jungs dominiert, statt hilflos auf einen Helden warten zu müssen. Dies war bestimmt auch ein Grund dafür, dass Sheena auch viele weibliche Fans hat. Neben dem Spielfilm existiert noch eine 26-teilige Schwarz-Weiß Serie von 1955/1956 mit Irish McCalla und eine 35-teilige Fernsehserie aus dem Jahr 2000 mit Gena Lee Nolin. Außerdem machte man Sheena zur Titelheldin in einer Serie des Pulp-Magazines, die zwischen 1951 und 1954 in den USA erschienen sind.
