Shah Alam is a city in the Petaling District (together with a small portion of neighbouring Klang District) within Selangor State, Malaysia. It is located about 25 kilometres (15 mi) west of the country's capital, Kuala Lumpur. In 1978, it replaced Kuala Lumpur as the capital city of the state of Selangor due to Kuala Lumpur's incorporation into a Federal Territory in 1974. Shah Alam was the first planned city in Malaysia after independence in 1957.

Es ereignen sich deutlich weniger Staus als in der malaysischen Hauptstadt Kuala Lumpur. Züge des Eisenbahnunternehmens KTM Komuter fahren zwei Stationen im Stadtgebiet Shah Alams an: Shah Alam und Batu 3. Um den öffentlichen Personennahverkehr zu verbessern, ist eine Stadtbahn in Planung. Wichtigstes Unternehmen vor Ort ist der malaysische Automobilhersteller Proton, der in Shah Alam ein großes Werk besitzt. Proton folgten eine Menge anderer, sowohl malaysischer als auch ausländischer Unternehmen und ließen die lokale Wirtschaft, ähnlich wie in ganz Malaysia, aufblühen. Shah Alam gilt als Industriezentrum, ist aber auch für viele Arbeitnehmer, die in Kuala Lumpur arbeiten, als Wohnort attraktiv. Berühmtestes Gebäude der Stadt ist die am 11. März 1988 fertiggestellte Sultan-Salahuddin-Abdul-Aziz-Moschee. Sie ist die größte Moschee in Malaysia. Außerdem befindet sich in Shah Alam ein großes, modernes Multifunktions-Stadion, das Shah Alam Stadium, welches über 60.000 Zuschauer fasst.
