The members of Shadow Gallery have also collaborated with other progressive metal bands. Dream Theater's James LaBrie contributed backing vocals to the song "I Believe" (which appeared on Shadow Gallery's 1998 album, Tyranny), and in return Shadow Gallery members have contributed to LaBrie's side projects. Despite complex passages in their songs, Shadow Gallery combines them with tight songwriting, production and performance. Their songs, often in the context of a concept album or story, are frequently long with extended instrumental pieces in the middle. For diversity, their music is heavy at times and mellow at others, sometimes incorporating elements of neo-classical and symphonic metal. On October 29, 2008, lead singer Mike Baker died of a heart attack at age 45.

Bei Tyranny handelt es sich um ein Konzeptalbum, das als Thema die Gewissensbisse eines Angestellten in der Waffenindustrie, seine Aktionen gegen seinen ehemaligen Arbeitgeber und die Schwierigkeiten, die er sich damit aufhalst, behandelt. Die musikalische Umsetzung der erzählten Geschichte ist dicht und hymnisch. DC Cooper, James LaBrie und Laura Jaeger steuerten Gesangsparts beteiligter Personen bei. Nach Tyranny arbeitete die Band weiter im Studio an Beteiligung an Nebenprojekten wie James LaBries Mullmuzzler, Explorer's Club II, Tribute to Pink Floyd und Beisteuerung von Gitarren- und Keyboard-Solo für Ayreon sowie am weiteren Ausbau des Studios. 2001 wurde das Album Legacy aufgenommen. Es schliesst stilistisch an Carved in Stone an, was gleich zu Beginn des Albums durch den Songs Cliffhanger klar wird. Das neue Album ist allerdings weniger „heavy“ als Tyranny. Der Titel First Light hat eine Spielzeit von über 34 Minuten, ist aber dennoch kurzweilig, was an den zahlreichen Breaks und den Melodien liegt. Im Anschluss an die Veröffentlichung von Legacy ging die Band wieder Nebenprojekte an und begab sich nach einiger Zeit wieder ins Studio, um das fünfte Album – Room V – aufzunehmen. 2005 erschien Room V, das thematisch an Tyranny anschliesst. Auf der Bonus CD einer Albumversion findet sich ein langes Pink Floyd Medley wieder. Hervorzuheben sind die beiden Tatsachen, dass Shadow Gallery noch nie auf Tour waren, sowie keine Singleauskopplungen vorweisen können. Am 29. Oktober 2008 verstarb der Sänger Mike A. Baker im Alter von 45 Jahren an einem Herzinfarkt.
