Sensurround is a process developed in the 1970s by Universal Studios to enhance the audio experience during the presentation of theatrical movies. Specifically developed to showcase the 1974 film Earthquake, the process was also used in three subsequent films, Midway (1976), Rollercoaster (1977) and in the theatrical version of Saga of a Star World (1978), the Battlestar Galactica pilot.

Sensurround helped bring wider recognition to established loudspeaker manufacturer Cerwin Vega, and aided in establishing a strong reputation for new audio amplifier company BGW Systems. The increased awareness of extended low frequency sound reproduction that Sensurround brought to film audiences was a factor in the increase in subwoofer sales and in the rise in the number of subwoofer designs in the late 1970s and 1980s.

Zur Unterbringung des Tones auf dem Filmstreifen gab es verschiedene Standards: 6-Spur-Magnetton bei 70-mm-Film, 4-Spur-Magnetton bei 35-mm-Film und eine optische Lichtton-Spur für ältere 35-mm-Projektionssysteme. Das Sensurround-System benötigte im Kino eine spezielle Dekodierbox, mehrere Verstärker mit 1000 Watt Leistung und zehn große, speziell angepasste Tiefton-Lautsprecher (Subwoofer, die zu gleichen Teilen vorne und hinten im Saal aufgestellt wurden), die einen Schalldruck von etwa 100 bis 120 dB(A) erzeugten. Der Effekt im Film Erdbeben war sehr realistisch (vor allem aber laut). In einigen Gegenden sollen Zuschauer gedacht haben, es finde tatsächlich ein Erdbeben statt. In älteren Kinos rieselte durch den starken Schalldruck der Staub von der Decke und gab dem Film Erdbeben eine besondere Note. In einem Kino in der US-amerikanischen Stadt Hackensack fiel während der Vorführung des Filmes Achterbahn sogar ein Teil der Decke herunter und beschädigte zehn Sitze, auf denen zum Glück niemand saß. Wegen der tieffrequenten Töne sollten Filme in Sensurround in Deutschland nur in einzeln stehenden Kinos aufgeführt werden, da durch die Tieftöne benachbarte Kinosäle beeinträchtigt wurden.

O sistema gerou inúmeros problemas por causa de sua alta intensidade sonora que chegou a causar danos estruturais aos edifícios de alguns cinemas, desabamentos e ferimentos em algumas pessoas. Salas de cinemas vizinhas sofriam com o ruído gerado pelo uso do Sensurround e a única saída era realizar sessões simultâneas.
