The story recounts the life and racing career of Seabiscuit, an undersized and overlooked thoroughbred race horse whose unexpected successes made him a hugely popular sensation in the United States near the end of the Great Depression. The film follows the book fairly closely, albeit taking the usual "Hollywood biography" liberties with times and places here and there in order to compress the presentation. David McCullough's narration gives the film somewhat of a "documentary" feel and adds to the drama of the story. There are also many horseracing scenes in which the camera is placed among the jockeys, giving the audience a realistic sense of "riding along" with the horses.
