More than three million documents, including peer-reviewed journal content, spanning hundreds of years of scientific and technological discovery, and conference proceedings, are searched through this dedicated gateway. In addition to the published works of its partners, scitopia. org also searches a database of approximately 50 million worldwide patents from the United States Patent and Trademark Office, the Japan Patent Office and the European Patent Office. To access the content, visitors to scitopia. org use an interface developed by Deep Web Technologies. Most recently known for its work on science. gov, Deep Web Technologies has experience in the development and refinement of federated searching, particularly in the development of scientific portals. The Beta version of Scitopia. org was released in June 2007. Scitopia came out of Beta in October 2007.

Der gemeinsame Datenbestand umfasst mehr als 3 Millionen peer-reviewte Fachartikel, Tagungsberichte und Patentinformationen, und reicht teilweise bis 1884 zurück. Ziel des Projektes ist es nach Barbara Lange vom IEEE „nicht einfach ein weiteres Suchportal zu schaffen, sondern eine Plattform, auf der mit großer Einfachheit häufig zitierte Arbeiten gefunden werden können, unbelastet vom Rauschen des Internets“. Am 17. Oktober 2007 beendete die Website ihr Betastadium.
