- The Schürzenjäger, formerly Zillertaler Schürzenjäger, are one of the most successful bands of Austria. It was founded in 1973. "Schürzenjäger" is a German term for "Heartbreaker", which was first used in the early 1900s. According to the band history they were named "Schürzenjäger" by a female bartender in Austria during a concert, when they didn't have a band name. Like Slavko Avsenik and his Original Oberkrainer came out of the adjustments of the changed conditions of the media culture. They developed in the course of time from interpreters of traditional music with modern instruments to a band with a repertoire from folk music over Pop music to Rock music. Their first big hit was their "Zillertaler Hochzeitsmarsch" named interpretation of a traditional folk dance melody. From this they began to introduce more rock elements, inspired by new (1990) drummer Patrick Cox. After "Zillertal Hochzeitsblues (1990)" they moved to the wider German audience under Montana (Later BMG Ariola) in 1991. With their commercial success, the "Schürzenjäger" in Austria became the epitome for filling the gap between rock and "Volksmusik", establishing the genre of "Alpen Rock" (Alpine Rock). The success of the "Zillertaler Hochzeitsmarsch" was seen to the folk music community as abuse of cultural inheritance, not as success of regional traditional music. Every year in August the Schürzenjäger celebrates one of the biggest open air concerts in Austria at the end of a tour. Since 1999 these big "Alpen Air" concerts have been every other year, with the most recent being on 06 August 2005, in Hintertux, Zillertal. This was the finale of the tour "Hinter dem Horizont" The Schürzenjäger were on tour from March to July 2007 for the last album "Lust auf mehr". This was the final tour, culminating in the traditional Alpen Air in Finkenberg, Zillertal on Saturday 21 July 2007.
