Nach dem vorläufigen amtlichen Endergebnis blieb die CDU von Ministerpräsident Stanislaw Tillich bei leichten Stimmverlusten die klar stärkste Partei. Auch die DIE LINKE verlor Stimmenanteile. Während die SPD ihr historisch niedriges Wahlergebnis von 2004 leicht verbessern konnte, legte die FDP deutlich zu, so dass eine Landtagskoalition von CDU und FDP als Alternative zur Fortsetzung der bisherigen CDU/SPD-Koalition möglich ist. Während Bündnis 90/Grüne ihr Ergebnis stabilisierten, gelang der NPD trotz deutlicher Verluste der erneute Einzug in den Landtag. Die Wahlbeteiligung lag bei 52,2 % und sank damit im Vergleich zu 2004 um 7,4 Prozentpunkte.
