Sassafras albidum (Sassafras, White Sassafras, Red Sassafras, or Silky Sassafras) is a species of Sassafras native to eastern North America, from southern Maine and southern Ontario west to Iowa, and south to central Florida and eastern Texas. It occurs throughout the eastern deciduous forest habitat type, at altitudes of sea level up to 1,500 m. It formerly also occurred in southern Wisconsin, but is extinct there as a native tree.

- Der Sassafrasbaum (Sassafras albidum), auch Fenchelholzbaum oder Nelkenzimtbaum, ist ein im östlichen Nordamerika heimisches Lorbeergewächs, das über Florida auch nach Europa eingeführt wurde. Die Bäume werden bis zu 35 Meter hoch. Aus der Wurzelrinde und den Früchten lässt sich Sassafrasöl gewinnen, das als Parfüm und Aromastoff dient und früher auch zur Herstellung von Root Beer verwendet wurde. In den meisten Ländern außerhalb der USA wird Sassafras aufgrund seines hohen Gehaltes an Safrol, das krebserregend ist, als Giftpflanze angesehen. Auch in den USA wird heute für kommerziell hergestelltes Root Beer nur mehr künstliches Sassafras-Aroma eingesetzt; einige Privatproduzenten verwenden aber weiterhin Sassafras. Safrol liefert auch einen Rohstoff zur Herstellung von MDMA. Eine Besonderheit des Sassafrasbaums ist, dass an einer Pflanze drei unterschiedliche Blattformen vorkommen können.
