Iwo Jima se tornou célebre por ter sido ali que foi tirada uma das mais famosas fotografias da imprensa mundial: aquela que mostra um grupo de fuzileiros navais estadunidenses (Marines) fincando a bandeira do seu país no solo do Monte Suribachi, após a conquista da ilha. Três marines do episódio verdadeiro, além de outros que também estiveram na batalha real, fizeram pequenas participações no filme. A bandeira também era a verdadeira, emprestada ao filme pelo Museu dos Fuzilieiros em Quântico, Virgínia.
