Sand animation is a term which has two meanings. It is the name given to a style of live performance art, and also to a type of animation. In the former, an artist creates a series of images using sand, a process which is achieved by applying sand to a surface and then rendering images by drawing lines and figures in the sand with one's hands. To increase visibility and to add further artistic aesthetic, a sand animation performer will often use the aid of an overhead projector or lightboard.

In the latter, animators move around sand on a backlighted or frontlighted piece of glass to create each frame for their animated films. Caroline Leaf is a pioneer of this type of animation. It has also been intermittently used in recent years by Belarusfilm.
  • L'animation de sable est une technique cinématographique utilisant les propriétés plastiques du sable afin de réaliser une image en mouvement. Le principe général et le plus courant d'animation de sable est celui d'une table lumineuse sur laquelle on vient disposer une couche de sable. La prise de vue est réalisée par le dessus, à l'instar d'un banc-titre. L'effet d'ombres et lumières est créé par les déplacements du sable, qui rendent la couche de sable plus ou moins épaisse et par conséquent les ombres plus ou moins marquées. On pourra noter plusieurs techniques de prise de vue qui peuvent être utilisées : Stop-Motion classique, les images sont prises une par une, entre chaque, on effectue les modifications sur le plan. Animation live, les images sont filmées en temps réel, et montrent le réalisateur travailler son œuvre.

Такое представление требует от исполнителя особенного профессионализма и осторожности, так как картина может быть легко испорчена от неверного движения.

Ses ve ışık, gösterinin daha da etkili olmasını sağlar ve büyülü bir atmosfer yaratır. En önemli temsilcileri arasında dünyaca ünlü İsrailli ressam İlana Yahav sayılabilir.
