Samuel Chandler Crafts was a United States Representative, Senator and Governor of Vermont. Born in Woodstock, Connecticut, he graduated from Harvard College in 1790 and moved in 1791 to Vermont with his father, who founded the town of Craftsbury. He was town clerk from 1799 to 1829 and was a delegate to the Vermont Constitutional convention in 1793. He was a member of the Vermont House of Representatives in 1796, 1800-1803, and 1805, and was clerk of the house in 1798-1799.

- Samuel Chandler Crafts was a United States Representative, Senator and Governor of Vermont. He was town clerk from 1799 to 1829 and was a delegate to the Vermont Constitutional convention in 1793. He was a member of the Vermont House of Representatives in 1796, 1800-1803, and 1805, and was clerk of the house in 1798-1799. He was register of probate from 1796 to 1815 and was assistant judge of the Orleans County Court from 1800 to 1810 and 1825 to 1828. Crafts made an extensive botanical reconnaissance of the Mississippi Valley in 1802; he was a member of the State council from 1809 to 1813 and was chief judge of the Orleans County Court from 1810 to 1816. He was elected to the Fifteenth and to the three succeeding Congresses, serving from March 4, 1817 to March 3, 1825; he again served as State councilor in 1825 and 1826. Craft was Governor of Vermont from 1828 to 1831 and a member of the Vermont constitutional convention of 1829 and served as its president. He was clerk of Orleans County from 1836 to 1839, and was appointed and subsequently elected to the U.S. Senate to fill the vacancy caused by the resignation of Samuel Prentiss, and served from April 23, 1842, until March 3, 1843. Samuel Crafts retired to his farm in Craftsbury where he died in 1853; interment was in North Craftsbury Cemetery, North Craftsbury.
