Samuel Cornelius Phillips (January 5, 1923 – July 30, 2003), better known as Sam Phillips, was an American businessman, record executive, record producer and DJ who played an important role in the emergence of rock and roll as the major form of popular music in the 1950s. He was a producer, label owner, and talent scout throughout the 1940s and 1950s. He most notably founded Sun Studios and Sun Records in Memphis, Tennessee.

Naar verluidt beviel Phillips het liedje dat hij wilde zingen niet en samen gingen ze aan het werk om in de plaats daarvan de single That's All Right Mama op te nemen. Daarna volgden nog een paar succesvolle singles, maar geen complete albums met Presley. Ook de opnames van het befaamde Million Dollar Quartet, met Elvis, Jerry Lee Lewis, Carl Perkins en Johnny Cash, stammen uit deze studio. In 1955 verkocht Phillips het contract van Presley voor 35.000 dollar, een recordbedrag in die dagen, aan platenmaatschappij RCA. Hij behaalde vervolgens successen met zangers als Johnny Cash en Roy Orbison.
