  • Sam McVey or Sam McVea was a famous heavyweight contender in boxing during the early 20th century. He fought out of Oxnard, California. McVey ranked alongside Sam Langford and Joe Jeanette as one of the top black fighters during a famed career that took him across the globe. His greatest wins include two victories over both Sam Langford and Harry Wills, which won him the "colored heavyweight title" on two separate occasions, respectively. In his later years he worked as a trainer and sparring partner for both black and white fighters training for important contests.

Johnson gewann alle Kämpfe über 20 Runden, einen durch KO in der 20. Runde, zwei nach Punkten gegen den damals erst 20-jährigen McVey wohl auch aufgrund seiner Erfahrung. Als Johnson später Schwergewichtsweltmeister wurde akzeptierte er aber praktisch nur weiße Herausforderer. Sein berühmtester Kampf war ein Nicht-Titelkampf gegen einen anderen Schwarzen, Joe Jeannette, der Johnson aufgrund seiner Hautfarbe nicht zum Titel herausfordern konnte. Am 7. April 1909 traf er in Paris auf seinen Gegner und schlug ihn nicht weniger als 27 mal zu Boden, er selbst wurde 11 mal zu Boden geschlagen. Schließlich waren in der 50. Runde seine Augen so zugeschwollen, dass der Kampf abgebrochen wurde. Er trat auch mehrfach gegen Sam Langford und Harry Wills an und gewann den Colored heavyweight title. Er starb verarmt an Lungenentzündung. 1999 fand McVey Aufnahme in die International Boxing Hall of Fame.
